Mother of U.S. diplomat hurt in \u2018health attack\u2019 speaks out<\/strong><\/a> – The mother of a U.S. diplomat who fell ill after suspected\u00a0\u201chealth attacks\u201d<\/a>\u00a0in China is speaking out, sharing her family\u2019s harrowing story publicly in hopes of raising awareness about the potential danger facing American diplomats and other workers around the world.\u00a0Laura Hughes, an Air Force veteran, says her daughter\u00a0Catherine Werner is struggling with the effects of traumatic brain injury<\/a>\u00a0after experiencing strange sounds and sensations at her apartment in Guangzhou, where Werner was a foreign trade officer until being medevaced out earlier this year.\u00a0She\u2019s calling on the State Department to do more to solve the mystery that has eluded investigators since\u00a0U.S. diplomats and spies starting getting sick in Cuba in late 2016<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cI do not believe that our military, our diplomats around the world or here at home are safe,\u201d Hughes says in an interview with NBC News Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell. \u201cBecause this this weapon system is creating havoc.\u201d<\/p>\n

Autism prevalence now 1 in 40 US kids, study estimates<\/strong><\/a> – A survey of parents across the United States estimates that one in 40 children has autism spectrum disorder, according to a study published Monday in the journal\u00a0Pediatrics<\/a>.\u00a0In other words, the condition was reported in 2.5% of children, representing an estimated 1.5 million kids ages 3 to 17.\u00a0A\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0released this year by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated the prevalence at one in 59 children or about 1.7%, based on 2014 data. \u201cPrevalence is not growing that rapidly, although the CDC\u2019s data suggests it is still growing,\u201d Thomas Frazier, chief science officer of the advocacy organization\u00a0Autism Speaks<\/a>, said in an emailed statement. He was not involved in the new report. \u201cWhat is happening is that these studies use methods that are a bit more liberal and inclusive than the CDC\u2019s methods,\u201d Frazier said, adding that he prefers the CDC\u2019s numbers but understands \u201cthat they are likely a bit conservative.\u201d<\/p>\n

College students fear mold in dorms led to Adenovirus death of University of Maryland freshman<\/strong><\/a> – University of\u00a0Maryland students are growing increasingly concerned mold problems in their dorms may be linked to the\u00a0death of a freshman who succumbed to the same rare virus<\/a>\u00a0that killed 11 children in New Jersey.\u00a0Olivia Paregol, 18, was early in her first semester\u00a0when she developed a cough, which later worsened to pneumonia. She died on November 18 at\u00a0Johns Hopkins Hospital, from adenovirus, which causes respiratory problems.\u00a0Paregol, from\u00a0Howard County, Maryland, died less than three weeks after the school learned she had the illness. The university has since said five more students have illnesses tied to the same rare virus.\u00a0Jessica Thompson told CBS News<\/a>\u00a0she and her roommate discovered mold on their shoes and clothes in their dorm back in August \u2014 and believes the fungus caused them to fall ill.\u00a0\u201cYou can\u2019t sleep at night because the pillow is right next to mold and you\u2019re up all night coughing,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cWe got to go home on the weekends and we would be totally fine at home, and we would come back and would be sniffling and coughing and then have headaches.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Probiotics no help to young kids with stomach virus<\/strong><\/a> – Children with stomach viruses increasingly are given probiotics to ease symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. But a major U.S. study led by Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis shows that a commonly used probiotic is not effective in improving symptoms in young patients with gastroenteritis. The findings are published Nov. 22 in The\u00a0New England Journal of Medicine<\/i>. While rarely fatal in the United States, gastroenteritis\u2014frequently yet erroneously called \u201cstomach flu\u201d\u2014accounts for 1.7 million pediatric emergency room visits and more than 70,000 hospitalizations each year. The study, involving nearly 1,000\u00a0children<\/a>\u00a0ages 3 months to 4 years, provides evidence against the popular and costly use of probiotics\u2014live microorganisms believed to restore the balance of intestinal bacteria and boost the immune system. \u201cProbiotics have become an increasingly popular way to treat children experiencing acute gastroenteritis,\u201d said the study\u2019s lead author, David Schnadower, MD, who conducted the research as a Washington University professor of pediatrics and a physician at St. Louis Children\u2019s Hospital. \u201cSome smaller studies have indicated that probiotics may help, however, such studies had a number of limitations. We sought to provide independent and conclusive evidence for or against\u00a0probiotic<\/a>\u00a0use in infants and toddlers with acute gastroenteritis.\u201d<\/p>\n

Promising Alzheimer\u2019s vaccine draws closer to human trials, researcher<\/strong><\/a> – A DNA vaccine shown to reduce the accumulation of toxic proteins associated with Alzheimer\u2019s disease in mice could be moving closer to human trial, according to researchers University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. A team with the center\u2019s Peter O\u2019Donnell Jr. Brain Institute tested the vaccine, which researchers say prompts an immune response that reduces the build-up of toxic tau and beta-amyloid proteins. Their findings were\u00a0published this week in the medical journal Alzheimer\u2019s Research and Therapy<\/a>. \u201cThis study is the culmination of a decade of research that has repeatedly demonstrated that this vaccine can effectively and safely target in animal models what we think may cause Alzheimer\u2019s disease,\u201d Dr. Roger Rosenburg, founding director of the Alzheimer\u2019s Disease Center at UT Southwestern, said in a news release. \u201cI believe we\u2019re getting close to testing this therapy in people.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
