Why vaccine opponents think they know more than medical experts<\/strong><\/a> – One of the most contentious areas of health policy over the past two decades has been the safety of vaccination. Vaccines prevent the outbreak of\u00a0diseases that used to be widespread<\/a>, like polio, and scientific consensus\u00a0strongly supports their safety<\/a>. Yet many Americans\u00a0refuse<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0delay<\/a>\u00a0the vaccination of their children out of fear that it could lead to autism, even though scientific consensus\u00a0refutes this claim<\/a>. Anti-vaccine attitudes have been fueled in large part by\u00a0growing rates of autism diagnoses<\/a>\u00a0as well as a\u00a0now debunked study<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0The Lancet<\/a>\u00a0that linked\u00a0autism<\/a>\u00a0and the measles mumps rubella (MMR) vaccine \u2013 pushing many parents to see vaccination as a potential explanation for their child\u2019s autism diagnosis. The growing \u201canti-vax\u201d movement here and abroad has seen parents refuse to give their\u00a0children mandatory school vaccinations<\/a>,\u00a0growing numbers of celebrities<\/a>\u00a0questioning\u00a0vaccine safety<\/a>, and even\u00a0pet owners refusing to vaccinate their dogs<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 forcing the British Veterinary Association to\u00a0issue a statement<\/a>\u00a0in April that dogs cannot develop autism.<\/p>\n

1 in 9 U.S. adults over 45 reports memory problems<\/strong><\/a> – If you\u2019re middle-aged and you think you\u2019re losing your memory, you\u2019re not alone, a new U.S. government report shows.\u00a0In fact, one in nine Americans aged 45 and older say they are experiencing thinking declines. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noticing a decline in your mental abilities (\u201ccognitive decline\u201d) is one of the earliest signs of impending Alzheimer\u2019s disease or dementia.\u00a0\u201cSymptoms of confusion and\u00a0memory loss<\/a>\u00a0are not a normal part of aging,\u201d said lead researcher Christopher Taylor, a CDC epidemiologist. \u201cAdults with confusion or memory loss should talk to a\u00a0health care<\/a>\u00a0professional who can evaluate their symptoms and discuss possible treatments, management of other co-occurring chronic health conditions,\u00a0advance care planning<\/a>, and caregiving needs.\u201d\u00a0One Alzheimer\u2019s expert noted the findings point to an even larger issue.\u00a0\u201cThis survey is an indicator of the future problem and burden of dementia, and what\u00a0public health officials<\/a>\u00a0should start addressing now,\u201d said Matthew Baumgart, senior director of public policy at the Alzheimer\u2019s Association.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

New guidelines label millions more people as having high blood pressure<\/strong><\/a> – Adopting new guidelines for high blood\u00a0pressure (hypertension) would dramatically increase the number of people labeled as having the condition and being recommended for drug treatment, finds a study published by\u00a0The BMJ<\/i>\u00a0today. The findings show that, if the guidelines were introduced in the US and China, more than half of those aged 45-75 years in both countries would be considered hypertensive. The American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) recently released guideline recommendations for hypertension with lower\u00a0blood pressure<\/a>\u00a0values used to define elevated blood pressure, and lower\u00a0treatment<\/a>\u00a0thresholds, than those recommended in current guidelines. While the impact of changes in guideline recommendations has been evaluated in the US, less is known about how they translate to other populations. China, in particular, has high levels of hypertension and the world\u2019s largest population, so it is important to understand the impact of adopting these standards in China.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Multivitamin-mineral supplements do not reduce heart disease, deaths<\/strong><\/a> – Taking multivitamins and minerals does not reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease or associated deaths, according to a new review of existing research.\u00a0\u201cThere is no scientific evidence that (these) supplements promote cardiovascular health,\u201d lead author Dr. Joonseok Kim from University of Alabama at Birmingham told Reuters Health by email. \u201cWe hope that our paper helps to settle the debate\u201d on the use of multivitamins and minerals (MVM) for cardiovascular disease prevention.\u00a0Americans spent an estimated $36.1 billion on vitamins and nutritional supplements in 2017, and many believe that MVM supplements maintain and promote health by preventing various diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Most large-scale studies, however, have found no such benefit.\u00a0Kim\u2019s team pooled evidence from 18 studies with more than 2 million participants to investigate associations between MVM supplementation and various cardiovascular problems, including coronary heart disease and stroke.<\/p>\n
