A Look at Mercury and Cardiovascular<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>Disease<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Mercury\u2019s toxic properties have been apparent\u00a0\"\"for centuries. Nonetheless, from the time of the first\u00a0Emperor of China<\/a>\u00a0on, doctors have been fascinated with the metal\u2019s purported curative properties. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, health practitioners blithely used mercury as a medical treatment for everything from\u00a0syphilis<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0teething discomfort<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0dysentery<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"Rush to treat liver patients causing more harm than good<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Doctors risk overdiagnosing the most common and fastest-growing liver condition, exposing patients to harmful tests, according to a study published today.\u00a0It is estimated that one in four people<\/a> in the world is suffering from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease<\/a> (NAFLD), and there are concerns it could lead to cirrhosis.\u00a0Expert bodies in Europe are now calling for patients to be screened for the condition and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK has issued guidance to doctors indicating that at-risk groups should be tested.<\/p>\n

Preconception paternal SSRI use linked to ADHD in offspring<\/strong><\/a> Paternal use of selective \"\"serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) before conception is associated with increased risk of attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in offspring, according to a study published online Dec. 11 in Pediatrics<\/i>.\u00a0Fen Yang, from Fudan University in Shanghai, and colleagues conducted a cohort study<\/a> involving 781,470 singletons born between 1996 and 2008 who were followed through 2013. Children whose fathers used SSRIs during the three months preceding conception were identified as exposed.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

\"\"Pilots Would Rather Leave the Military than be Forced to get Anthrax Vaccine<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Many news stories about vaccines bludgeon readers with the message that it is unacceptable to raise questions about vaccine safety.\u00a0When the topic of vaccine safety manages to run the gauntlet and enter into public debate, the focus usually is on childhood vaccines.\u00a0But what about the neglected topic of adult vaccine safety? The question is a reasonable one because adults are experiencing increasing pressure from health workers to say yes to various shots.\u00a0Although most adults (at least for now) can still decline, adults in the military are subject to extremely onerous vaccine regulations that require them to receive up to a dozen vaccines<\/a>, depending on the region where they are serving.\u00a0These include vaccines that most other American adults will never encounter, including shots for rabies, typhoid\u2014and anthrax.<\/p>\n

\"\"Generation at risk: America\u2019s youngest facing mental health crisis<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0The Centers for Disease
\nControl and Prevention reports that 1 in 5 American children ages 3 through 17 \u2014 about 15 million \u2014 have a diagnosable mental, emotional or behavioral disorder in a given year.\u00a0Only 20 percent of these children are ever diagnosed and receive treatment; 80 percent \u2014 about 12 million \u2014 aren\u2019t receiving treatment.\u00a0Recent research indicates that serious depression is worsening in teens, especially girls<\/a>, and the suicide rate among girls reached a 40-year high in 2015<\/a>, according to a CDC report released in August.<\/p>\n
