Premature Ejaculation

If the problem occurs more than 50% of attempted sexual relations, a dysfunctional pattern usually exists for which treatment may be appropriate.

The pattern of rapid attainment of sexual release is difficult to change in marital and long term relationships. The fact that female arousal and orgasm require more time that male arousal is being increasingly recognized, and this may result in increased recognition and definition of premature ejaculation as a problem.

The prevalence rate of premature ejaculation in American males is estimated to range from 30-70%. The National Health and Social Life Survey (NHSLS) indicate a prevalence of 30%, which is fairly steady through all adult age categories. However, various surveys have shown that many men do not report premature ejaculation to their physician. This may be because of embarrassment or a feeling that no treatment is available for the problem. Such survey data suggest that the percentage of men who experience premature ejaculation at some point in their lives is almost certainly more than the 30% reported in NHSLS.

For Men make it last

It is estimated that approximately one-third of sexually active males – one third! - contend with premature ejaculation. That means when six guys are around telling conquest stories, on average two of them have left the battle field early. Prevalent as it may be, PE takes a major toll on relationships and a man's self esteem.

Dr Harry Fisch is a professor of clinical urology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York and author of the male Biological Clock. He's crystal clear in his view that PE does not have a psychological cause.

"Why do I say it's not psychological: If there's a chemical treatment and it works, it's not psychological."

The prevailing PE information in magazines and on the web is like schoolyard wisdom: a lot of myth based on a few factual morsels. Here's what you need to know about the most quoted PE fixes:

  • Creams and sprays: Lidocaine treatments have a numbing effect. Downsides: They can work too well and inhibit arousal, and they can anesthetize your partner.
  • Condoms: bummer for some, lifesaver for others.
  • Squeeze technique: biological equivalent of standing on a running hose. Downsides: Women may not care assist , the body doesn't learn better habits, and it's kind of awkward for the guy.
  • Release the tension beforehand: If you masturbate in advance, it can help extend duration. Downsides: You face the same issue next time around, and it can backfire if you only had one shell in the cannon that day.
  • Neurectomy (removal of nerve tissue) or penal implants: In the AUA's words, these surgeries "have risks that far outweigh the possible benefits."

Premature Ejaculation – It's not all in your head

PE is the most common male sexual dysfunction affecting men and their partners. However, available data suggest that only 1-12% of males self-reporting receive treatment for their dysfunction. According to The Journal of Sexual Medicine editor Irwin Goldstein, most physicians do not inquire about the existence of premature ejaculation when the patient has other sexual complaints or when the partner has orgasmic dysfunction. As seen in this study, premature ejaculation adversely affects sexual satisfaction, and partner distress is a common motivation for afflicted men to seek treatment.

The Next Wave Of Sex Drugs – In Wake of Viagra, Pharmaceutical Industry Targets Another Male Malady

Premature ejaculation like impotence is recognized as a legitimate medical diagnosis, and is listed in the official manual of mental disorders used by the psychiatric community. As with other conditions that were once thought to be purely psychological, such as depression, research increasingly suggests the condition has a biological basis.

Premature Ejaculation: Impact on Quality of Life

There is literature to support the concept that men have lower self esteem outside of the bedroom when they have PE; 50% of respondants reported reluctance to start new relationships and distress in not satisfying partners.
